Coronavirus Update from Dr. Firisin
In times of stress and the unknown we have to dig deep for courage and find calm in our hearts. I am hoping this message will provide you with some information to help you and your families stay healthy and safe and provide some peace of mind. There is a lot of information so keep scrolling! Office Updates: My practice will remain open business as usual. The number of people in my office in a day is well below the crowd numbers that raise concern. I am implementing diligent cleaning procedures above and beyond what our ordinary system involves.
If you are healthy, things are business as usual. I have opened up my full Medicinary in Fullscript so that you are able to shop for some of the immune supplements and herbs I recommend below in this email.(Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Zinc, etc...). Some are backordered but supplies have been replenished as they become available so keep checking back. If you don't already have an account you can create one or log in here. https://www.coastalnaturalmedicine.com/medicinary
If you are sick, please stay home. Self-isolation is one of the most powerful methods we have to keep from infecting others.
Because I cannot bill insurance for phone or telemedicine appointments, I am offering a discounted self-pay structure for telemedicine or phone appointments. If you'd like to keep your appointment but do it from home, the appointment fee will be significantly discounted to $65.00 for established patients until March 31st. My normal fee for this service is $125.00. (this may be extended depending on how things evolve) The fee listed above will apply for a "sick" appointment.
I am still accepting new patients during this time as well. If you know of someone who wants to come in to discuss their overall health and boosting their immune system naturally, healing their gut, etc send them my way, I'd love to help! If you haven't been in in a while or are overdue for a follow up, please schedule so we can follow up and ensure you are in the best health you can be!
Avoid shaking hands.
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after being in a public setting.
Be sure to try your hands and clean in the web spaces of your hands each time.
Wash your hands after no more than 3 consecutive uses of hand sanitizer.
If you sneeze our cough, cover your mouth in your elbow or with a disposable tissue or paper cloth. Dispose of the cloth immediately and wash hands immediately.
I would only recommend a facemask if you are going to be in a large crowd in a contained space, perhaps a subway or an airplane. The only masks that are going to be effective are those with a N95 rating.
Use disinfecting wipes in public areas wherever possible.
Taking care of yourself:
Decrease Sugar consumption (sugar suppresses your immune function for several hours after consumption)
If you take prescription medications, be sure to fill at least one month up to 90 days worth of prescriptions at your pharmacy
If you take supplements, consider ordering a month or so ahead in case supplies become harder to obtain.
You can order immune support supplements and herbs through Fullscript, I have opened unrestricted access to the catalog for the time being.
Supplements/Herbs: (most available on Fullscript)
Herbs that can boost your immune system: cordyceps (mushrooms), elderberry, echinacea, lemon balm, cilantro and parsley, garlic, olive leave, oregano oil, licorice
Colloidal Silver: can be used as a nasal spray or throat spray at the early onset of symptoms.
Vitamin C: 500 mg/day with meals. Increase as soon as you show signs of illness to 2000-3000 mg (in divided doses) per day. Vitamin C can cause diarrhea in some at higher doses, so try consuming with food and spreading out dosing should this occur
Vitamin A/beta carotene is helpful at the early signs of illness. If you are pregnant do not take Vitamin A without consulting a physician first. 10,000 or 50,000 IU with food up to twice per day
Zinc: 10-30 mg/day (there are different forms of zinc, zinc picolinate is preferred)
Vitamin D: 31000-5000 IU/dayIf you have not had your levels checked, schedule an appointment with me to have them checked as you may require an even higher dose short term.
Probiotics: Look for probiotics containing 10 billion units of bacteria
Many herbs are found in different combination immune formulas like Immunoberry Liquid by Designs for Health and Biovegetarian capsules by Priority one (Both in Fullscript). There are several other immune formulas available in Fullscript as well
Essential Oils: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TREAT YOURSELF OR ANYONE ELSE AT HOME WITH ESSENTIAL OILS. I ONLY RECOMMEND THEM FOR DIFFUSION, NOT FOR INTERNAL CONSUMPTION
Oils that can be useful, especially for sinus and lung concerns in a steam inhalation of diffuser are eucalyptus, thyme, lavender, cinnamon, spearmint, clove, and frankincense
Hydrotherapy: I recommend constitutional hydrotherapy and magic sock hydrotherapy for boosting the immune system. Both forms of hydrotherapy will boost your immune system. They can be done daily and will be both preventative and help to treat an acute illness. I do these treatments in the office and invite you to come in to have a Constitutional Hydrotherapy treatment to boost your immune system. If you are sick I am recommending the in home version of the treatment. Please call the office if you have any questions or would like to schedule this amazing immune boosting, detoxifying, stress reducing treatment to keep yourself healthy! Doing a series of hydrotherapy during this time is highly recommended. It's my favorite! I will continue to pray that each of you stays well and healthy. Please be wise in your choices. The greatest risk for adverse health effects is in our elderly population. If you know of anyone near you, perhaps offer to run an errand for them or see if they need anything so they don't have to go out and risk exposure. The majority of cases will experience mild to moderate symptoms similar to the flu. Look for sore throat, dry cough, fever, and aches as some hallmark symptoms. When in doubt, seek medical attention. This list is in NO WAY a replacement for a full medical evaluation and treatment. If you need assistance, please ask. If you are sick, STAY HOME!!! TRUST your body and your immune system. Our bodies are designed to be sick, it is part of the human condition and not to be feared. With the proper tools and perspective, you can support your body's own intelligent design. And that's what you all have committed to do in your naturopathic care so kudos to you! Now take a giant deep breath, get a cup of tea, play with your kids, read a book, get some sleep, go for a walk. I saw my first spring blooms today on my way to the office! There is always hope! Love and Blessings in health, Dr. Firisin
